Accommodations: translation, read-aloud and more

Every lesson has built-in accommodations: 'Zoom' for larger text, translation, 'Read Aloud' with text highlighting, voice typing for written answers, and notification sounds. You can't turn accommodations on for a student from your account, and the 'Students' page has no accommodation settings. The student turns them on from the gear icon in their lesson.

For: teachers

Turn on translation, read-aloud or larger text in a lesson

The gear icon is only inside a lesson. Open the lesson first; the 'Courses' and 'Activity' pages don't have it.

  1. Click the gear icon at the bottom left of the lesson. 'Settings' opens.
  2. Under 'Translation', pick a 'Language'. To have answers translated too, turn on 'Translate answers on click'.
  3. Turn on 'Read Aloud'. 'Rate', 'Auto Play' and 'Text Highlighting' appear so you can adjust them.
  4. Drag the 'Zoom' slider under 'General' to make text larger.

'Settings' also has 'Play Notification Sounds' under 'Notifications'.

The 'Language' list starts on 'Spanish' and offers 195 languages. If a language your student needs isn't available, send us a request.

Settings are saved with the student's account. They stay on after the student signs out and back in, and follow them to another device.

Translate or hear one piece of text

  1. Select the text on the slide.
  2. Click 'Translate' or 'Read Aloud' in the small toolbar that appears.
  3. If you chose 'Translate', read the 'Translation' panel, then click 'Okay'.

The 'Translate' toolbar appears on text that supports translation, such as slide titles, accordion text and collaboration-board prompts and posts. Some lines, like activity instructions, don't show it.

'Read Aloud' appears on the toolbar only after you turn on 'Read Aloud' in 'Settings'. A small player bar with previous, play, stop and next then sits at the lower left.

Speak an answer instead of typing it

To speak an answer instead of typing it, click the microphone button in the answer box. Voice typing isn't in 'Settings'; it's on each written-answer box. Voice typing understands spoken English.

If voice typing shows Something went wrong, please try again, check that the device has a microphone and that the browser is allowed to use it.

If nothing is read aloud

If nothing is read aloud, check that the device's sound is on and the browser tab isn't muted. Read-aloud isn't available in every language; where it isn't, text is read in English. If it still doesn't work, send us a request with the device and browser.

See what your students see

To see what students see, open a lesson with 'Preview' and click the gear icon at the bottom left. Changes you make there only change your own view.

  1. Click 'Courses' and open the course.
  2. Click the lesson in the outline on the left, then click 'Preview'.
  3. In the preview tab, click the gear icon at the bottom left.

Changing the lesson itself

You can't edit a lesson's slides, questions or activities. They're the same for every class. For what you can change, see Can I modify or differentiate lessons?

Still need help?

Include:

  • the student's username and class name
  • the lesson and the accommodation that isn't working
  • the device and browser
  • the exact message on screen, if any
