Students can't start the course until they finish the Skills Inventory

If a course has a 'Pre-Course Skills Inventory Survey', students must finish it before they can start any lesson in that course. A student who hasn't will see This session is pending and a button to open the survey. A unit pre-assessment doesn't hold students back like this.

How the survey holds students back

In Transition courses that have a Skills Inventory Survey, students take the survey first. Until they finish it, lessons show greyed out with a 'Pending' stamp and won't open.

On a course with a Skills Inventory Survey, assigning a single lesson doesn't get around it: a student who hasn't finished the survey sees 'This session is pending' and is asked to complete the survey first. Courses without a survey have no such step.

If you see both a Skills Inventory and a course pre-assessment, they're separate, and the Skills Inventory comes first. If the 'Students' page shows a course as 'Not Started', that refers to the course itself, not the Skills Inventory.

You don't need to assign the Skills Inventory separately. Ori creates it for each student when you assign them work in a course that has one. To assign it to particular students, see Assign the Skills Inventory and pre-assessments.

Have the student take the survey

The survey shows one statement per page. Students choose from 'Strongly disagree' to 'Strongly agree' and click 'Submit Answer'. The number of statements depends on the course.

On 'Home', click 'Open' on the survey in 'Continue Learning:'.
On each page, pick one option and click 'Submit Answer'.
If 'Not so fast...' appears, click 'Got it' and answer the statement.
On the last page, click 'I'm Done'.

The first lesson then appears on 'Home'.

Skip the survey for your students

Two teacher options skip the survey:

When you assign a lesson 'Front of Class' to students who haven't finished the survey, the 'Pre-Course Skills Inventory Survey' step lets you choose 'Assign "[unit > lesson]" and skip the skills inventory survey for all students above'. The other option depends on the students: assign them the survey, or, if they already have it, cancel the lesson assignment so they finish the survey first. Live Participation has no skip option.
When you complete a Skills Inventory Survey session, you can tick 'Mark skills inventory survey session as skipped for all unchecked students.'

Apart from those two options, there's no setting that skips or waives the Skills Inventory Survey. If a student can't take it, send us a request with the student's username and the course name. For what else we can help with, see What Ori support can do, and how to reach us.
