Switch a live session to student-paced (including absent students)

When you complete a 'Live Participation' or 'Front of Class' session, students you untick either lose their answers (the default) or, if you choose 'Allow unchecked students to complete the assignment at their own pace.', get to finish the lesson on their own.

Before you start

  • You can hand a 'Front of Class' session to students to finish on their own, the same way as a 'Live Participation' session.
  • A 'Student Paced' session has no own-pace option when you complete it: students you untick lose their progress.
  • Letting students finish on their own doesn't use extra licenses.

Let some students finish a live lesson on their own

  1. Go to the session's last page, or open 'Sessions' and click '...' on the session's card, then 'Complete...'.
  2. Untick the students who haven't finished and should carry on alone.
  3. Choose 'Allow unchecked students to complete the assignment at their own pace.'
  4. Click 'Complete Session for Selected'.

The own-pace option appears only after you untick at least one student. The button's wording changes with your choices. With every student checked it reads 'Complete Session'. With some unchecked it reads 'Complete Session for Selected' (or 'Complete Session for Selected and Discard unchecked students' progress' if their answers are discarded). With no one checked it reads 'Allow the unchecked students to continue at their own pace' or 'Discard unchecked students' progress'.

You'll see 'The students are now able to go back and complete their work at their own pace.' After you switch, the students you unticked find the lesson under 'Active' on their Home, and the session card changes to 'Student Paced'. No due date is set.

If some students were absent

The last page lists only students who joined the session, so absent students aren't there to untick. They don't stop you completing the session. If nobody has joined, you can't complete it.

What happens to absent students depends on how you complete the session. If you let at least one student finish at their own pace, absent students keep the lesson on their Home too. Otherwise the lesson disappears from their Home when you complete the session, and you'll need to assign it to them again as a 'Student-Paced Single Lesson'. Check an absent student's Home before creating a new session.
