Front of Class, Live Participation or Student Paced: which to use

Every lesson you teach in Ori is assigned in one of three delivery modes: 'Front of Class', 'Live Participation' or 'Student Paced'. You pick the mode on the first step of a new assignment, 'Choose a delivery method'. Which one fits depends on whether your students have their own devices and whether you're leading the lesson.

For: teachers

Front of Class: you present, students take part as a group

In 'Front of Class', you present one lesson on a smartboard or by sharing your screen. Students don't sign in: they take part as a group, answering the interactive slides together while you lead. It works when students don't have their own devices.

• Front of Class lessons don't appear for students, and students can't open them. You present them from your screen.
• A 'Front of Class' session has no join code or link, because students don't open it on their devices.
• In 'Front of Class', students don't answer on devices, so you enter a score for each student on the session's last page. Those scores show in the course 'Progress' tab once you complete the session.

When you complete a Front of Class session, anyone you've unchecked has their responses discarded. To let them finish on their own instead, choose 'Allow unchecked students to complete the assignment at their own pace.' The session then becomes student-paced, and students also see it in 'My Assignments'. Either way, the lesson shows in each checked student's 'Activity' with their score. If you ran a lesson Front of Class and want students to do it on their own devices, create a new Live Participation or student-paced assignment for it. You can leave the Front of Class one in place.

Live Participation: you lead, students follow on their own devices

In 'Live Participation', you move through the lesson with the purple arrows and your students follow along on their own devices, answering questions and posting to collaboration boards. Students don't get page arrows: their screen moves when yours does. A student who joins late opens on the page you're on.

Student Paced: students work on their own

In 'Student Paced', you don't present. Students sign in and work through the lesson on their own devices, at their own pace. You can assign one lesson ('Student-Paced Single Lesson') or several lessons or a whole course ('Student-Paced Course Assignment').

Collaboration boards and delivery settings

Where the collaboration-board settings appear depends on the mode: on the first step for 'Live Participation', on 'Configure delivery settings' for a student-paced single lesson, and not at all for 'Front of Class'.

On 'Configure delivery settings': 'Require students to complete all activities before moving to the next page' is on to start with. Under Collaboration Boards, 'Allow students to "like" posts' is on and 'Approve student posts before they appear on the board' is off.

One lesson or a whole course

'Front of Class' and 'Live Participation' are for one lesson at a time. To assign several lessons, a unit or a whole course, choose 'Student Paced' and then 'Student-Paced Course Assignment'.
