Choose what teachers can manage (district settings)

Teachers can't add students or manage classes until an admin turns these settings on. A teacher setting works only when it's on for both the district and the school.

For: district admins · Not available when: your district syncs rosters from Clever or ClassLink

The three teacher settings

  • 'Add existing students to classes' lets teachers add a student who already has an Ori account, by email, and remove students from their class.
  • 'Create and manage classes' lets teachers create, rename and leave their own classes.
  • 'Create new student accounts' lets teachers invite a student who doesn't have an account yet.

Turn settings on for your district

The 'Rostering' page is on your district's page: click your district's name in the left navigation, then 'Rostering'. It's for district admins; school admins don't have this link.

  1. In the admin portal, click your district's name in the left navigation.
  2. Click 'Rostering'.
  3. Under 'Teacher Permissions', tick 'Add existing students to classes', 'Create and manage classes' or 'Create new student accounts'.
  4. If you ticked 'Create new student accounts', add at least one accepted student email domain: see Let students join with your school's email domain.
  5. Click 'Save'.

You'll see 'Rostering configuration saved successfully'. Then turn the same settings on for each school.

Turn settings on for each school

  1. Open the school's page: 'Sites' and the school.
  2. Under 'Teacher Rostering Permissions', tick the settings you want.
  3. Click 'Save'.

A school's setting only works if your district has turned it on too. A setting the district hasn't turned on shows 'Permission is disabled by your organization admin...': turn it on for the district first. School admins set their own school's settings by clicking their school's name in the left menu.

The 'Create New Site' form has 'Name', an 'Active' switch, and 'Teacher Rostering Permissions': 'Add existing students to classes', 'Create and manage classes' and 'Create new student accounts'. So you can set them when you create a site.

Choose whether teachers can give students licenses

This is a district setting, separate from the teacher rostering settings.

  1. Click your district's name in the left navigation.
  2. Turn 'Allow teachers to allocate available licenses' on or off.
  3. Click 'Save'.

What teachers see when a setting is off

What a teacher sees when one of these settings is off, and what they can do about it, is in Why can't I add students or change my class?. To make the change for them, see Managing classes.

If your district uses Clever or ClassLink

If your district syncs rosters from Clever or ClassLink, the teacher settings don't appear on 'Rostering' and teachers can't add students or manage classes in Ori. If you want teachers to make changes in Ori as well, send us a request.
