Managing classes

A class is a group of students and one or more teachers at one school. Teachers see only the students in their own classes.

For: school (site) admins and district admins

How classes work

A class can have more than one teacher, and a student can be in more than one class. You can put people in a class from the class itself, from a person's 'Assigned Classes' tab, or with the roster spreadsheet. For what teachers can do themselves, see Choose what teachers can manage.

A student you create doesn't appear on any teacher's 'Students' page until they're put in a class. A student has to be in a class before its teachers can assign them work, and they need a license to open it.

Before you add people to a class

  • Someone has to have an Ori account before you can add them to a class. If they don't have one yet, create the account first: see Add teachers or Create student accounts.
  • The class pickers only list people at that class's school who aren't in the class yet. If someone is missing, a district admin first adds them to the school.

Create or rename a class

  1. In the admin portal, open 'Sites' and select the school. School admins select their school in the left navigation instead.
  2. Click 'Classes'.
  3. Click '+ New' ('Create Class' if the school has no classes yet).
  4. In 'Create New Class', type the 'Name' (up to 64 characters) and, if you like, a 'Description'.
  5. To add people now, use the 'Teachers' and 'Students' tabs.
  6. Click 'Save'.

You'll see 'Class created successfully'.

To rename a class, open it, change its 'Name' and click 'Save'. For many classes at once, see Create many classes at once.

Add teachers and students

  1. Open 'Sites', the school, then 'Classes', and select the class.
  2. Open the 'Teachers (n)' or 'Students (n)' tab.
  3. Pick the person under 'New Teacher' or 'New Student'.
  4. Click '+ Add'. Repeat for each person.
  5. Click 'Save'.

You'll see 'Changes saved'.

You can also put one person in a class from their account: open them in 'Users', go to 'Assigned Classes', pick the class and click '+ Add'. This saves straight away.

What adding a student changes

A student who already has an Ori account doesn't need an invitation. Once they're in the class and have a license, they sign in as usual and see their assignments.

Remove teachers and students

  1. Open the class and its 'Teachers (n)' or 'Students (n)' tab.
  2. Click the trash icon next to the person ('Remove Teacher' or 'Remove Student').
  3. Click 'Save'.

You'll see 'Changes saved'.

What removing a student changes

Removing a student from a class only takes them out of the class. Their account stays active, and their assignments, progress and license don't change. If they were already in a session, they stay in it.

What removing a teacher changes

Removing a teacher from a class takes away their access to that class and its students. Their account stays active, and students keep the work that teacher assigned. If it was the teacher's only class, their 'Activity', 'Sessions' and 'Students' pages show You have no classes assigned. Please contact your administrator. until they're added to a class. They can still browse courses.

Move a student or change a class's teacher

To move a student to another class, remove them from the old class, then add them to the new one.

To hand a class to a different teacher, add the new teacher on the class's 'Teachers (n)' tab, then remove the old one.

Co-teachers and substitutes

Only school and district admins can add a second teacher or a substitute to a class. Teachers can't add each other. For the teacher's side, see Co-teaching a class or giving a substitute access.

A co-teacher sees the class and its students.

Lesson sessions belong to the teacher who started them. A co-teacher or substitute on the same class doesn't see another teacher's sessions on their 'Sessions' page and can't open, change, end or delete them; opening another teacher's session link shows Oops, something unexpected went wrong... please try again. To teach the same lesson, they start their own session.

Course assignments work differently: they belong to the student, not to the teacher who made them. Every teacher of the student's class sees them in the course's 'Progress' view. If two teachers assign the same course to a student, the student still has one assignment, with the most recent teacher's settings.

Delete a class

Deleting a class is permanent and can't be undone.

  1. Open 'Sites', the school, then 'Classes', and select the class.
  2. Click 'Delete'.
  3. In the 'Delete Class' dialog, click 'Delete'.

You'll see 'Class deleted successfully'.

Deleting a class doesn't delete anyone's account. Its teachers and students stay active at the school; they're no longer in that class. Ori doesn't have a way to archive a class. You can keep an old class or delete it.

If your district uses Clever or ClassLink

If your district syncs rosters from Clever or ClassLink, classes that come from the sync are read-only in Ori, for teachers and for school and district admins. You can't add or remove people, rename, or delete them in Ori. Make changes in Clever, ClassLink or your student information system, and they reach Ori at the next sync.
