Fix 'No valid license' for a student (admins)

The 'no valid license' message looks the same whatever the cause: the student has no license for that curriculum, their license was removed, the license has ended, or it hasn't started yet. Check the student's license first, then the course the teacher assigned, then the subscription.

For: school (site) admins and district admins

Make sure the student has a license for that curriculum

Licenses are held per student and per curriculum. A Transition license doesn't cover an Emotional Well-Being course, and the reverse is also true.

If the student has no license for the course's curriculum, or theirs was removed, allocate one. Allocate licenses to students from your school's page in the admin portal. You can tick many students at once. The steps are in Allocate licenses.

If 'Allocate Licenses' shows 'Available to allocate: 0' or 'Not enough licenses to allocate', your school's limit or your district's licenses are used up. Your district admin can raise your school's limit. If there are no licenses left to give, send us a request.

Check the course the teacher assigned

The message also appears when the work was assigned under the wrong course, so check the course the teacher picked when assigning. The teacher's checks are in A student sees 'No valid license' (teachers).

Check the subscription under 'Licenses' (district admins)

If a teacher is missing a course, check 'Licenses'. If the subscription is 'Active' and has free licenses, check that the teacher's school has licenses allocated and that the students have one. If the course's product isn't listed, send us a request.

'Pending' means the license hasn't started yet. Until its start date, students see the 'no valid license' message.

If a license shows 'Expires Soon' or 'Expired', or its dates look wrong, send us a request about renewing or extending it. See Renew, add licenses or ask for an extension.

Still need help?

Include:

  • the student's username and class name, and the course
  • your district and school
  • the subscription's 'Order Confirmation Code' or your purchase order number, if a course is missing
  • the exact message the student sees
