Create student accounts
Create each student in the admin portal, then add them to a class and give them a license. Before a student can open a lesson they need three things: a class, a license, and a way to sign in.
For: school (site) admins and district admins
Create a student account
- In the admin portal, open 'Sites' and click the school. School admins click their school's name in the left menu instead.
- Open 'Users' and click '+ New'.
- Set 'User Type' to 'Student'.
- Fill in 'First Name', 'Last Name', 'Username', 'Site' and 'Grade'. Add 'Email' if the student has one.
- Under the password options, choose 'Set student password now' and type the password twice, or choose the invite option if you entered an email.
- Click 'Create'.
'Grade' runs from 'Pre-Kindergarten' to 'Grade 12', plus 'Adult' and 'None'. 'Learning Experience' starts as 'Not set'.
If Ori says an email address is invalid, make sure there's no space at the end of it.
Choose how the student gets a password
When you create a student you choose 'Set student password now' or 'Invite student to Ori via email. The email will include a link for the student to set their password'. The invite option only works once you've entered a valid email.
- Set it now: a password needs 8 to 20 characters, with at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one number or special character. See Set or reset a student's password (admins).
- Invite by email: if you create a student with an email address and don't set a password, Ori emails the student a link to set one.
If the student will sign in with Google
Enter the student's email, and it must match their Google account. The invite option only emails a link to set an Ori password. It doesn't connect the account to Google.
If the student has no email address
A student doesn't need an email address to use Ori: you can create the account with a username and password. Leave 'Email' blank and choose 'Set student password now'.
If a teacher's students have no email addresses, the teacher can send you each student's first name, last name, grade and class, and ask for username-and-password accounts.
Add the student to a class and give them a license
- On the student's 'Assigned Classes', choose the class and click '+ Add'.
- On the site, open 'Allocate Licenses', choose the license, tick the student and click 'Save'.
A student you create in the admin portal doesn't appear for their teacher until you add them to that teacher's class.
Many students, or teacher-created accounts
For many students at once, see Create or update many accounts with a roster spreadsheet. For teacher-created accounts, see Let students join with your school's email domain.
